Microsoft has released SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 and SCCM 2012 SP2. Now you can download and upgrade your SCCM 2012 and SCCM 2012 R2 infrastructure servers to SCCM 2012 SP2 and SCCM 2012 R SP1. In this post, I’m trying to explain the difference between two installers available for SCCM 2012 SP1 and R2. It seems most of the people (including me) are getting confused about which installer needs to be used to upgrade the existing SCCM 2012 SP1 or R2 environment.
As SCCM 2012 R2 Preview was released a couple of days before the additional clients are also released with Preview Label. The clients bring a lot of support for non-Windows operating systems and can be download from here. The ConfigMgr 2012 R2 Mac client is packaged into an MSI file that you’ll need to download the Microsoft Download Center (see ConfigMgr 2012 R2 Mac client link above, choose the ConfigMgrMacClient.msi file when asked for what file to download) and install on a Windows system. As SCCM 2012 R2 Preview was released a couple of days before the additional clients are also released with Preview Label. The clients bring a lot of support for non-Windows operating systems and can be download from here. For more information about Configuration Manager client settings, see How to configure client settings in System Center Configuration Manager. Download the client source files for Macs Download the Mac OS X client file package, ConfigmgrMacClient.msi, and save it to a computer that runs Windows.
Before start downloading the SCCM 2012 SP2 installer files (SC2012_SP2_Configmgr_SCEP.exe, SC2012_R2_SP1_Configmgr.exe), you need to understand which installers are actually needed for your existing SCCM 2012 SP1 or R2 environment. You don’t need to download the installer SC2012_R2_SP1_Configmgr to upgrade SCCM 2012R2 to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1. Rather you may need to download the SC2012_SP2_Configmgr_SCEP.exe. So, the binaries of SCCM 2012 SP2 and SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 are same. More details about this topic is available here in Jason’s post.
So, what is the reason for having SC2012_R2_SP1_Configmgr.exe (1,128 KB) installer? If you’re a SCCM 2012 SP1 customer and you don’t have R2 features enabled. Now, you are planning enable R2 features then you need to download and install SC2012_R2_SP1_Configmgr.exe.
Johan had tweeted about the confusing error if you download and install “SC2012_R2_SP1_Configmgr.exe” in your existing SCCM 2012 R2 environment. The funny error is “To run this software, the computer must run System Center 2012 Configuration Manager with Service Pack 2.“
Download SC2012_SP2_Configmgr_SCEP.exe (780,310) from here.
Download SC2012_R2_SP1_Configmgr.exe (1,128 KB) from here.
More details about the new Features and improvements of SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 and SP2 are available in technet documentation.
Also, More details about strategy behind SPs (Service Packs) for SCCM (ConfigMgr) is explained here.
Can you please share the logs or error details?
ConfigMgr 2012 R2 Cu2 has been released 2 weeks back. Until now, I didn’t get time to check CU2. Today I tried installing it. No changes in CU2 installation process, We need to follow top to bottom approach to update SCCM 2012 R2 hierarchy to Cumilative Update 2. Need to update CU2 on CAS server and then primaries and so on. If you’ve not applied SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 then no need to update that now. You can directly install CU2 on SCCM 2012 R2 infrastructure (clients and Servers). All the patches (fixes) included in SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 is now part of CU2.

Sccm 2012 R2 Evaluation Download
Hi Anoop,
Came across an issue with SCCM 2012 R2 TS execution, this appears only on certain devices and popped up only for two of our apps.
First occurrence was with Adobe CS6 suite deployment where the TS hangs after installing acrobat and after long time reports a failure with exit code -2016411115
Now its with the IE 11 deployment where there are 10 hotfixes installed and then IE11. Same issue occurs after hotfixes are installed.
In both cases, when the packages are deployed separately its all good. Also issue is seen only on couple of devices, say 1 in 20. Done bit of reading thru posts and forums and could see that its a bug. We are on 2012 R2 CU2. Is there some thing that is fixed in CU4 for TS execution?
